Why we kept the three chestnuts

The courtyard was planned round three old trees. It cost us four flats and it was worth it.

When we first walked onto the site there were three old horse chestnuts in the middle of it. The first plan had them cut down for a bigger building.

Four flats fewer

We redrew it round them. The courtyard is now as wide as the crowns, the building is four flats smaller, and every flat on the courtyard side looks into the trees.

In May

In May they flower white, in October they drop conkers for every child in the building. We think that’s worth four flats.
